Christmas trip – short-term and mid-term holiday in-home care

We know however you choose to celebrate during the festive season, your number one wish is likely to be surrounded by your family. If you are packing your bags for a family gathering this Christmas period, and you have a disability or required personal care, there are options for you to receive care at your holiday destination through your NDIS package.
In this month’s blog we break down what short-term accommodation is and the NDIS care you can receive while staying away from your residential home.

What is short-term holiday care?

Short-term or mid-term holiday care is part of the Short-Term Accommodation (STA) care, which can be funded through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Short Term Accommodation, which includes respite, is support you need when living out of your home for a short period.

STA includes things like personal care, accommodation, food and activities.

If you are travelling away from your home this Christmas, and you require in-home care at your holiday destination, you may be eligible to claim NDIS support. The NDIS is unlikely to pay for your holiday, however, care you need as part of your disability during this trip may be eligible for funding.

You can read more about the details and regulations around claiming STA care through the NDIS here. You can also call our friendly team on 1300 201 351 to chat about your holiday plans and help understand what you can and can’t claim on the NDIS.

Temporary in-home care in Queensland

We understand your care needs do not change just because your accommodation does. Whether you’re staying in a hotel, back at your family home, or heading to a destination holiday with family, you may still require the everyday personal care you receive at home; and your right to receive it doesn’t change.
Some things you can get support with on your holiday include:

  • Personal care
  • Medication management
  • Community accessibility
  • In-home care
  • Travel support
  • Accommodation access

How to organise short-term holiday care in Queensland

When you have a disability, travelling can be a stressful time; particularly if you have additional travel accessibility requirements. Some things you can do if you need care at your destination are:

  • Research local providers in the area you are visiting.
  • Write a list of the care you think you’ll need during the period you are holidaying.
  • Understand what care is covered as part of your Aged Care or NDIS package.
  • Reach out to local organisations to check their availability early, because some staff can also take the holidays off and organisations will make staffing arrangements early.

If you are planning to travel to Brisbane, Townsville or surrounding areas this Christmas, Focused Health Care can support you with your care needs while you celebrate with family and friends.
