For many older Australians, independence means more than just living at home — it means staying in control of their own lives, routines, and choices. Whether it’s continuing a beloved morning ritual, enjoying the garden, or feeling safe in familiar surroundings, home is often where seniors feel most comfortable.

But as we age, managing health conditions, recovering from illness, or navigating the everyday challenges of chronic health conditions can make staying at home difficult. This is where private nursing care at home can make a powerful difference — offering medical support tailored to individual needs, while preserving the dignity and independence that seniors value most.

In this month’s blog, we explain how in-home nursing can help older Australians stay at home for longer.

The role of private nursing at home

Private nursing care at home brings professional, compassionate healthcare services right to the doorstep. Whether for short-term recovery or ongoing health needs, private nurses play an essential role in supporting seniors’ health and wellbeing without the need to leave home.

These qualified nurses can assist with a range of healthcare needs, including:

  • Medication management

    • Dispensing medication as needed or helping you organise or understand medication timetables and dosages.
  • Diabetes care

    • Mealtime preparation, in-home wound care, connection with allied health professionals and ongoing health management.
  • Wound care

    • Dressing, cleaning and managing wounds to reduce infection risk.
  • Mobility support

    • Support for in-home modifications and support aides and ensuring in-home accessibility.
  • Post-surgical care

    • Wound management, medication support, physical recovery and accessibility, as well as community access and support attending appointments.

Every visit is tailored to the individual’s medical condition, lifestyle, and preferences — helping seniors remain in control while receiving the high-quality care they need.

More choice and control under the Aged Care Act

The recent changes to the Aged Care Act are another step forward in supporting the independence of older Australians. With a greater focus on the rights of older people, the reforms aim to put seniors at the centre of decisions about their care and provides more opportunities to receive allied health and specialised care from home.

These reforms recognise older Australians want more say in how and where they receive care, and the flexibility to shape services around their lifestyle. Private in-home nursing is a clear example of this model in action, giving seniors the opportunity to choose the type of support that best suits their needs, goals, and personal values.
The new funding models are explained in our previous blog here, where the different funding options for in-home nursing are explained.

What about changes to Support at Home pricing?

With changes to Support at Home pricing from coming into effect from November 2025, it’s natural to have questions. These updates aim to create a more transparent and consistent pricing structure for services funded through My Aged Care, including in home services for seniors.

Your pricing for your in-home aged care supports will continue to be set by your care provider. This is what currently happens under the Home Care Packages Program. The main incoming change is happening on 1 July 2026 is the Australian Government will apply price caps.

While the changes are designed to make it easier for people to understand what they’re paying for, and ensure fairness within pricing across the country, it’s important to work with a provider who can clearly explain how the costs apply to you — and ensure the care you receive continues to meet your unique needs.

At Focused Health Care, we’re committed to helping clients navigate these changes with clarity and confidence. Contact us today if you have any questions about what this funding change means for you.
